How COVID-19 Impacts Lilly Library Services

In-Library Holds Pick-Up Begins Aug. 3

Beginning August 3, Lilly Library is offering in-library pickup of holds.

To place a hold, please do so through your library account, via the online catalog — or place a request via email at or by calling the library at (413) 587-1500 ext. 2. We have discontinued the use of our online request form. You will receive an email notification from CWMars when your materials are ready for pickup. Once you receive this notice, you will be able to come to the library at your leisure to retrieve your holds — no appointment required. Note: if you need guidance with the process of placing holds through the website, please call the library and we can assist you.

Holds pick-ups will occur at the circulation desk. Please note: there is no library browsing at this time.

Once you arrive to the library to pick-up your holds, please follow these guidelines for success and safety:

  • Wear a mask properly, this means it should cover your nose and mouth. Without a mask, you will be asked to leave.
  • Please maintain social distance when in line for the library. This means individuals or family groups must stay six feet apart as marked on our sidewalk
  • Do not enter the library until you see the lobby inside the front door is clear.
  • Do not proceed to the checkout desk until you see there are no other patrons in the library.
  • Exit to your left via the service door.

There will also be signage at the library to communicate these procedures.

Following these guidelines will keep the staff and patrons safe. They are the key to offering library browsing in the future. We miss our patrons and would love to see you soon.

Curbside Continues Until Aug. 3

Until August 3, Lilly is offering curbside service for materials. If possible, please place your holds online, through your account. This assures you’ll get your items as soon as possible.

Once your requests are received and fulfilled by the library, a staff member will contact you (either via email or by phone) to arrange a time period for you to pick up your materials. We put out materials in one-hour blocks, say from 10-11 or 4-5. You’ll have the opportunity to choose the hour block and the day desired (on the days that we are open.) Once your pick-up time block and day are decided, you’ll head to the library during that time block to pick-up your materials. Your requested materials will be placed in a paper bag with your name on them (last name first, then first name), and will be held on a table outside of the library. Please observe physical distancing guidelines while picking up books, and please wear a mask to ensure your safety and the safety of others picking up.

Returning Items

Patrons are welcome to return materials to the library, using the book drop. Materials will be quarantined for three days before they are checked in — your account will not reflect the return until after this quarantine period. You will not incur any fines during this quarantine period.

Curbside Print Requests

We are pleased to offer printing services for curbside pickup. Upload your materials through this form, and we will get in touch with you.

From-Home Fun

There are many digital resources available through our website. We are working on bringing virtual programming to you — please stay tuned!

Local and Statewide Updates

We are following guidelines recommended by the City of Northampton ( and plans are rapidly evolving. Please consult this page for any other updates.

Confused about what’s going on with COVID-19 in general — or in Western Mass in particular? Forbes Library came up with a great resource list of valued sources. Thanks, Forbes! The Daily Hampshire Gazette is also a great source for local news and has dropped its paywall for all COVID-19-related stories.

Please stay safe, stay home (as much as possible!), and stay well. We look forward to welcoming you back to the library when it is safe to do so. We miss you!
